Puppy ScamsBreeders have made us aware of a ring of exotic pet and puppy purchasers who offer cashier's checks which turn out to be insufficient funds as much as 3-4 weeks later when the bank has the check returned.
The other scam offers you a money order that is over the amount required to purchase the puppy (or other type of pet). Scammers offer to send someone to pick the dog up (sometime offering a bonus to hold the pet until the money order arrives) and ask you to refund the overpayment in cash to the person retrieving the animal. They leave with the dog and the cash.
Purchasers have been known to masquerade as a foreign national, a deaf priest, an invalided rich woman, etc.
FBI says possible connections to Nigeria, UK, Holland. Buyers actually come to your house to pick up the puppy. They have no shame.
Be vigilant and report to the FBI any documented activity.
Accept cash or require holding of funds for 30 days or more.
